Directions
Zip-Guard Heritage Wood Stain will enhance the natural beauty of wood grain, assuring a high quality, hand crafted, professional finish on hardwoods such as oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut. This unique wood stain provides the deep wood tone associated with high quality professional oil-borne stains in a low odor, low VOC, water-borne formulation. The colorants used provide long lasting color-fastness for interior or exterior applications when top-coated with an appropriate wood finish.
Preparation: Prior to staining, prepare raw wood by lightly sanding with 120 or 150 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by wiping the surface thoroughly with a water dampened cloth.
To control blotching on soft woods such as pine use a pre-stain sealer. Always follow manufacturer's instructions. Allow sealer to dry thoroughly before applying stain.
Recommended Applicators: Bristle or foam brush, soft cloth (lint free), painters pad, lambs wool or sponge mop, spray applicator. Applicators, tools and spills may be cleaned with soap and water.
Application: Stir Zip-Guard Wood Stain thoroughly. Do not dilute or mix with other stain brands, finishes, solvents or water. Working in the direction of the wood grain, apply a liberal amount of stain. Allow to dry 10-20 minutes before removing excess with a soft cloth. Lap marks and missed areas may be "blended in" by immediately repeating this process. To increase the depth or intensity of a color allow the stain to dry 4 hours and repeat the application process. Allow a single coat of stain to dry 6 hours before applying clear finishes, 8-12 hours for two or more coats of stain and 24 hours on floor applications.
Floors: If previously finished, sand to bare wood. Thoroughly sweep then vacuum all sanding dust. After vacuuming, wipe with tackrag (cloth dampened with water). Test small area for color. Working in the direction of the wood grain, apply a liberal amount of stain. Allow to dry 10-20 minutes before removing excess with a soft cloth. Working in small areas reduces chances of lap marks and missed areas. Lap marks and missed areas may be "blended in" by immediately repeating this process. To increase the depth or intensity of a color allow the stain to dry 4 hours and repeat the application process. Allow stain to dry 24 hours at temperatures of 65-75°F, or until thoroughly dry before top coating with a clear finish. Low temperature or high humidity can slow dry time. Suggestion: Pre-test drying of finish or lifting of stain in a small inconspicuous area before applying first coat of clear finish. Minimize brushing when using water-based clear finishes.
Finishing: For Beauty, Protection and Durability, topcoat with Zip-Guard Wood Finish.
